Mike / Anyone,
I have been having issues to connect with the outgoing (SMTP) email server. I do not use the tz250racing.com email acct too often, but since I noticed this (~1-2wks ago), I have not been able to send any messages. Incoming messages (via POP3) work just fine.
I do not believe it is an issue with my outlook as I have another (Verizon) profile that both sends and receives without issue.
I did not make any changes to the acct settings that would cause any issues.
I suspect that the Outgoing mail server name changed in conjunction with the recent forum "updates". at least, I hope!
My current config:
Outlook 2003 SP1; on Windows XP
Outgoing mail server (SMTP) = mail.tz250racing.com
Outgoing server port number = 25
Server Timeout = 1min
I've tried enabling/disabling requiring outgoing server identification (using same settings as incoming mail server) without any effect.
When I run the diagnostic test in Outlook, I get two errors:
1) Find outgoing mail server (SMTP): Outlook could not connect to the outgoing mail server (SMTP). The problem could be the server name or port, or your server may not support SSL. Verify your port and SSL settings in More Settings under the Advance tab.
2) Send test e-mail message: The specified server was found, but there was no response from the server. Please verify that the port and SSL information is correct. To access these settings close this dialog, then click More Settings and click on the Advanced tab.
Any / all help, direction, insight, etc. appreciated!!

to my knowledge there were no email server changes. The recent updates were to the forums database only.
Im back from my trip to the midwest (2 weeks on the road) and I'll verify everything here on my end tonite.

after months of consternation, i revisited my useless email again today and resolved the issue:
Changed SMTP port number from 25 to 587. now it works.
note i tried several other port numbers, none of which worked.
no idea why this is, but might be helpful for someone else in the future.

i came to find that some ISP's block port 25 in an effort to reduce spam. some IP definition, somewhere specifies that port 587 is defined for SMTP and is often a 'backup' to port 25, so long as it is supported by the mail server. in our case, this appears to be true.
interestingly, i have a second profile in my mail client (outlook '03) that is linked to an acct provided by my ISP (verizon). this one continues to function via port 25 for SMTP. this seems odd to me, but i digress...

well, im using port 25 to send smtp, and it works, perhaps the mail server is blocking verizon smtps on 25 due to spam issues... seems odd indeed, but im glad you got it working.

my suspicion is that my friendly neighborhood verizon router is blocking the port 25 SMTP...unless it benefits them.
but honestly, this is not my area of expertise!

Vince, you are correct, I have the same issue with Comcast where I live. Last year they blocked port 25 saying it's for spam control reasons. I found port 26 to be the best alternative as it does not require authentication as port 587 usually does.
It is not unusual for the mail service associated with a specific ISP to work fine with port 25 but for other non-isp provided email accounts to not work with port 25. This is because the SMTP server the ISP uses is inside their system and port 25 is only blocked for servers outside their system.
